[CHARTER - HUGUES II DE SADE, known as the... - Lot 64 - Gros & Delettrez
[CHARTER - HUGUES II DE SADE, known as the Old]. Fragment of the terrier of Hugues de Sade with autograph notes. Around 1349. One leaf on vellum: about 41 x 30.5 cm. In Latin. Extremely rare document with four notes in the hand of Hugues de Sade (8 lines), husband of Laure de Noves, notably relating to his son Paul de Sade (called Paulon). Hugues de Sade comments on the articles of succession concerning the vineyards of Bertrande Siméon, adjoining his own: he specifies the state of the parcels: ownership, sales, abandonment, etc. The abbot Dominique Robert de Briançon wrote in his work Etat de la Provence dans sa noblesse: "Hugues de Sade [...] left a book written on vellum, made in the year 1349, & that I have seen, in which he wrote all his affairs" (Paris, Aubouin, Emery et Clousier, 1693 - Tome III, pp. 21-22). The complete transcription of the charter, by the excellent paleographer Paul Langeard (initialed at the foot of the second page) is attached. Long later notes relating to Marie Magdeleine de Merles, married to M. de La Bruyère. This folio was reused in the 17th century: it was used as the cover for a study on the Durance by Balthazar de Merle, present in this catalog (lot n°298).
