[CHARTER - ROUEN -SEINE-MARITIME]. Charter... - Lot 55 - Gros & Delettrez
[CHARTER - ROUEN -SEINE-MARITIME]. Charter on vellum dated October 21, 1411. 16.7 x 28.5 cm. 24 lines on vellum. Amazing charter relating to additions and alterations made to the Palais de Justice in Rouen where, a few years later, the trial of Joan of Arc took place. Sandrin Le Quien, a master mason from Rouen, carried out work in the Palace of Justice in Rouen, including the construction of a small secret chamber. "To all those who in these letters would see where M. Let it be known that before Henry le Vigneron, tabellion [...] that Sandrin Le Quien had and received from Rouen the sum of 15 livres tournois which must be paid to him for a spot of masonry made by him in a new house which was added to the small one of the chastel of Rouen, where the jurisdictions of the said city of Rouen are held [...]". This is followed by an interesting enumeration of the work carried out and the materials used, then "to make on the side a small secret room [...] for which small room the said Sandrin sealed brand new ashlars [...] to withdraw the advices when necessary [...]". Could this be the room where Joan of Arc was placed by her accusers a few years later?
