Pierre PAULIN (1927-2009)
Articulated sofa called "Boudin Amphys", "Amphis" or "Serpent" with an adjustable metal structure enclosing a foam upholstery covered with an orange and beige fabric. Model created in 1969 then published by Alpha International, Mobilier National and by Habitat in 2000. H: 68 / W: 360 / D: 75 cm. Bibliography : Anne Chapoutot, Pierre Paulin - Un univers de formes, Édition du May, Paris, 1992, p. 82 to 85 (for a similar model). - Elisabeth Vedrenne, Anne-Marie Fèvre, Pierre Paulin, Édition Dis Voir, 2001, p. 65 (text). - Pierre Paulin, Editions Archibooks and Grand Hornu Images, 2008, pp. 238-242 (for a similar model). - L'Architecture d'Aujourd'hui, "Espace et lumière au 46e Salon des Artistes Décorateurs, Paris", N°146 oct-nov 1969 (for a similar model). The Amphis sofa is inspired by the fabulous animal amphisbene, a two-headed serpent in Roman mythology. It was created for the VIP room and the reception room of the French pavilion at the 1970 Osaka World Fair. It was imagined as a collective modular seat and can be extended to infinity. Its foam-upholstered seat, covered in coloured jersey, is in the image of Pierre Paulin, who liked to sculpt space by rounding off the angles and softening the lines. Pierre Paulin is undoubtedly considered, alongside Philippe Starck, as one of the only representatives of French design abroad. After studying at the Camondo school in Paris with the designer Maxime Old, he joined the design office of Marcel Gascoin and later the workshop of Pierre Guariche and Michel Mortier. Very early on, he drew on the influences of the Scandinavian designs of Alvar Aalto and Eero Saarinen, the American productions of Harry Bertoia, George Nelson, Charles Eames and Florence Knoll, as well as the repertoire of Le Corbusier. These will be found thereafter in his creations for Thonet or Artifort which will give birth to a design considered as avant-gardist. The sofa we present to you, with its foam padded seat and coloured jersey cover, is in the image of Pierre Paulin who liked to sculpt space by rounding off angles and softening lines. His creations are at the service of the body to become curved forms calling for relaxation and voluptuousness.
