SAKTI BURMAN (1935)
The acrobats. Watercolor and India ink on paper. Signed lower right. 48 x 63 cm Born in India, Burman arrived in Paris in the 1950s thanks to a scholarship to study at the Beaux-arts de Paris. There he learns the techniques of lithography. In 1963 he married the French painter Maïté Delteil. Nourished by both traditional Indian iconography and the masters of the Italian Renaissance whom he admired, the artist developed a very specific style by fusing elements of the Indian imagination with a resolutely modern and Western style and technique. A pantheon of mixed deities and mythical characters such as these acrobats are born under his pen to give birth to a deeply dreamlike and joyful work, suspended between dream and reality.
