Very rare portrait dolls of George Washington... - Lot 19 - Gros & Delettrez
Very rare portrait dolls of George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette According to their private verbal provenance, these two dolls would date from 1783, the year of the Treaty of Paris, which put an end to the war of independence of the United States of America. We do not know who made these two dolls, which have kept their original clothes in good condition. The material used to sculpt these two historical portraits seems to contain beeswax mixed with some other ingredient. The fragility of this medium explains why the features of the two characters are blurred, they remain nevertheless clearly recognizable. These museum pieces, respectively 10 and 11’’ tall, are said to be of French workmanship, alas still undetermined.
