The capture of Besançon Gouache on vellum pasted on panel 23 x 54cm Annotated " F V " in the lower right-hand corner Wetness on the left side and some rubbing In an antique carved wooden frame Provenance : former Vienna Becquet collection In 1674, Louis XIV took over Franche-Comté and Besançon after 201 years of Habsburg reign. He integrated it definitively into the Kingdom of France by the Treaty of Nijmegen. The original version is kept in Besançon, at the Musée du Temps, Palais, Granvelle, (see I. Richefort, Adam-François Van der Meulen, Peintre flamand au service de Louis XIV, Dexia Banque, Fonds Mercator, Presses universitaires de Rennes, 2004, p.108, fig.108, repr). The Museum of Versailles holds another studio version with some variants (both in format and composition of the foreground) (inv.MV8365)
