HUBER, Aloysius (1815-1865), an Alsatian... - Lot 267 - Gros & Delettrez
HUBER, Aloysius (1815-1865), an Alsatian worker incarcerated for unrest and conspiracy and a public works concessionaire. He was linked to Proudhon: the latter saw in him a proof of the economic capacity of a worker. L.A.S. written from the Conciergerie prison and addressed to Proudhon, himself incarcerated at the Sainte-Pélagie prison. [Paris], Conciergerie, October 3/November 1849. 3 pp. in-4. Address on the back of the second leaf. "The trial of June 13 is advancing, they are waiting for the end of it to transfer me with those who will be condemned, either to Doullens, or elsewhere. At this supreme hour when I am going to leave Paris, perhaps never to return, I think of you, I think of the few months we spent together and I regret at the same time not being able to shake your hand once again [...] you are the one of my last comrades in the Conciergerie whom I love and esteem the most [...] your memory will always be dear to me [...]". Huber mentions the person who passes on the letters, Proudhon's instructions if he were to leave and deplores the fact that he did not associate with "men of principle" in his "sphere of action, there were only revolutionaries. What a misfortune for me not to have met you then". He then evokes La Voix du Peuple and Le Constitutionnel and concludes "Adieu mon cher Proudhon". Rare.
