COLLIN DE PLANCY, Jacques-Albin-Simon (1794-1881), author of the Dictionnaire infernal and of a dictionary of occult sciences in which he gathered all the knowledge of the time concerning superstitions and demonology. As such, he occupies a special place in the literary pantheon of Claude Seignolle, himself the author of Evangiles du diable, an anthology of French popular beliefs dedicated to the devil. Set of 5 L.A.S. -L.A.S. to Jacques Locard. May 7, 1820. 3 pp. in-8. Address on the back of the second sheet. Interesting letter. Collin du Plancy announces the publication of his work Demoniana, or Anecdotes on the apparitions of demons, goblins and spectres and promises the success to his correspondent bookseller : " [...] Finally the Demoniana is finished ; there remained even two stories which were lost at the printing house and which one did not use. But it is certain that this in-18 has eaten more material than the history of the ghosts [...] ". -L.A.S. to the booksellers Périsse frères. Mechelen, June 14, 1843. 3 pp. in-4, address on the back of the second sheet. Interesting letter from Collin du Plancy concerning the re-publication of his most famous work: Le Dictionnaire infernal. He has been working for two years "on the third edition of my Dictionnaire infernal [...] because I want, with God's help, to make it a Catholic book without truncating it; and it is a great work. Instead of 2500 articles [...] this one will have 3000. The Jesuit fathers tell me that this book thus made will become necessary to all the ecclesiastics to whom it was prohibited [...] ". He evokes the conditions of edition, the illustration and explains to have been charged "by ecclesiastics to purify works which one wanted to cover with the approval [...]". -3 L.A.S. to Guérin, Bodu and Bernardet. Charenton-Saint-Maurice and s.l.n.d. 3 pp. in-8. Addresses on the back of the second leaves.
