Let us take a few lines from Wladyslawa Jaworska's essential work in the chapter on Slewinski: "Static portraits, the absence of gestures, intensified expression to the detriment of accessories, almost no tendency to decoration, a wise, profound, thoughtful painting: that is Slewinski in a nutshell.This is how Slewinski wanted to make himself known and leave his name in history..." and in the 1982 catalogue raisonné by the same author: "Slewinski chose, to portray common types... the indifferent, sad look; the model contemplates, his mind is absent."In "Old Man with a Pink Background", Slewinski adds to this usual absence of expression details that reveal something of the model: large, brilliant blue eyes, hypnotising by their fixity, suggest some psychological disorder, an uneven beard that largely eats into a face softened by time, and drooping shoulders embraced by an ageless jacket tell us about a life of overwhelming toil.One would dare to evoke the French 17th century and the Le Nain brothers. Beyond this quest for humanity, which the painter seeks in the depths of the model, we can admire the pictorial modernity and the lessons of Gauguin: the forms of the body are outlined by a black brush and daring and improbable colours dot the painting, such as the pink of the background, the lilac tones of the beard and the apple green touches of the shirt and the lower lip.
