In-folio, [14] f., 772 p. with 2 columns, postglazed fawn calf, false-nerve spine, havana morocco title-piece, ornate coffers, triple fillet and angular fleurons to the boards, gilt roulette to the edges, red edges (defects including lac. of part of the cover to the spine, rubbing and stains to the boards, very moderate sporadic foxing, some browned ff., small angular fly in the margin of p.513 to the end). First edition of this important dictionary by the Jesuit Jacques Villotte (1656-1743). Having failed to reach China via Turkey and Tartary, he returned to Persia in 1689; the account of his travels appeared in 1730. He spent twelve years in Isfahan, in contact with the Armenian community. This dictionary is the fruit of both his studies and his exchanges with the Armenians.
