[Honoré Gabriel Riquetti, comte de MIRABEAU].... - Lot 73 - Gros & Delettrez
[Honoré Gabriel Riquetti, comte de MIRABEAU]. Erotika Biblion. A Rome, De l'Imprimerie du Vatican, 1783. In-8, late fawn half-calf, decorated spine, red and blue morocco parts. iv, 188 pp. First edition printed in Switzerland by one of the three Neuchâtel printers (Louis Fauche, Favre and Vitel) to whom Mirabeau had assigned his work. Each of them printed an edition on their own presses. Mirabeau wrote this text in 1780, while imprisoned in the Vincennes dungeon. The work is by a "moralist and historian-philosopher". Each chapter deals with a singularity of morality: onanism, tribadism, bestiality, sexual mutilation, nymphomania Mirabeau draws on examples of oddities drawn mainly from the Bible, as well as examples from Greco-Latin antiquity. Mirabeau's ironic curiosity about the peculiarities he describes has led to this volume being regarded as a licentious work. "It's true that Mirabeau has a field day with it, but in a perfectly Voltairian style." (Dict. des Œuvres érotiques). Joints and covers restored, small angular wetness on a few leaves. Pia, 442; Dutel A-339*.
