HELMAN (Isidore Stanislas). Suite des seize... - Lot 94 - Gros & Delettrez
HELMAN (Isidore Stanislas). Suite des seize estampes représentant les conquêtes de l'empereur de la Chine, avec leur explication. A Paris, chez l'auteur, [ca. 1785-1788]. In-plano, [5] f., 24 pl., early 19th c. red half-maroquin with long grain and corners, smooth spine, gilt scroll, title and author, spine skilfully restored, carefully mounted on modern tabs (edges and spinebands slightly rubbed, small nicks in margins pl. V, VI and IX, XVI , dust on first leaf (advertisement), few moderate russets). A very fine copy of this rare suite of 21 prints depicting scenes of battles, victories and ceremonies of the Chinese emperor Kien-Long. The first 16 plates, printed between 1769 and 1774, are reduced from the extremely rare large engravings that Cochin produced after drawings by Giuseppe Castiglione, a missionary artist at the emperor's court; they are the work of the finest French engravers of the period: Augustin de Saint-Aubin, Jacques-Philippe Le Bas, Jacques Aliamet, Nicolas de Launay, Benoît-Louis Prévost, Pierre-Philippe Choffard Helman, a pupil of J. Le Bas, and Pierre-Philippe Choffard.P. Le Bas added 8 plates, including a large print on 3 leaves (pl. XVIII, XIX, and XX) illustrating the ordinary walk of the Emperor of China as he passes through the city of Peking. The copy contains the leaf that serves both as an assembly table and a prospectus, entitled: Suite des seize estampes , in 4 copies; the first 3 are similar, and at the foot of the 4th, there is mention of the forthcoming suite. Also included between plates XVI and XVII is a leaflet announcing the additional plates numbered XVII to XX. This copy was printed on laid paper manufactured by T. Dupuy (Auvergne), and fine margins have been preserved.
