Boîte ornée de camées La boîte en métal doré est de forme ovale et presque cylindrique. Elle est ornée d’un décor appliqué représentant des fleurettes et rinceaux d’émail blanc, bleu et noir sur or, enchâssant de petits rubis (ou grenats) ainsi qu’une collection de petits camées en agate du XVIe siècle. Sur le couvercle, le camée central est accidenté. Il représente Fortune tenant sa voile, debout sur un globe flottant au milieu de l’eau et entourée de scènes d’enlèvements (triton et nymphe, Nessus et Déjanire ?). Il est entouré de 20 autres petits camées, représentant des personnages mythologiques ou à l’antique, parmi lesquels on reconnaît Hercule exécutant ses travaux (un camée a été remplacé par une pierre blanche ou est sculptée une Vierge à l’Enfant). Le corps de la boîte est également orné de 30 camées représentant des personnages mythologiques ou à l’antique. Petit manque sur le camée central et un camée remplacé par une Vierge à l’Enfant. Le camée central du couvercle est à rapprocher d’un camée du XVIe siècle, de même taille, représentant Vénus ou Galatée dans la collection Médicis et conservé au Palazzo Pitti (inv. Gemme del 1921, n° 10 ; voir R. Gennaioli, Gemme dei Medici al Museo degli Argenti – Cammei e Intagli nelle collezioni di Palazzo Pitti, Florence, 2007, p. 157, n°13). ___ A box decorated with cameos The box in gilded metal is oval and almost cylindrical in shape. It is adorned with an applied decoration of white, blue and black enamel foliage and foliate scrolls on gold, set with small rubies (or garnets) and a collection of small 16th century agate cameos. On the lid, the central cameo is damaged. It depicts Fortune holding her sail, standing on a globe floating in the middle of the water and surrounded by scenes of abduction (triton and nymph, Nessus and Dejanira?). She is surrounded by 20 other small cameos depicting mythological or antique characters, including Hercules performing his labours (one cameo has been replaced by a white stone with a Virgin and Child carved on it). The body of the box is also decorated with 30 cameos representing mythological or antique figures. There is a minor loss to the central cameo and one cameo has been replaced by a Virgin and Child. Provenance: Probably Rothschild Collection, inventory number in black ink under the base: R3609 The central cameo on the lid is similar to a 16th-century cameo of the same size, depicting Venus or Galatea, in the Medici collection at Palazzo Pitti (inv. Gemme del 1921, no. 10; see R. Gennaioli, Gemme dei Medici al Museo degli Argenti - Cammei e Intagli nelle collezioni di Palazzo Pitti, Florence, 2007, p. 157, no. 13).
