[South Carolina]. A large draft of South Carolina from Cape - Lot 268
[South Carolina]. A large draft of South Carolina from Cape Roman to Port Royal. London, W. & I. Mount and T. Page, [between 1755 and 1778]. 1 copper-engraved map, 44.6 x 55.1 cm, watercolored borders (restorations).
Map illustrating the coast of South Carolina printed and sold by W. and I. Mount and T. Page , based on John Thornton's hydrographic chart first published in 1706 in the fourth book of The English pilot. It appeared in later editions of this work between 1755 and 1778, as described by Cumming.
This map shows the soundings made and highlights some of the settlements close to the coast. It appears to be based in part on information extracted verbatim from the Mathews manuscript of the 1680s, which had not been used until then, as evidenced by the statement "These creeks are accessible by canoe". However, much of the map's detail clearly derives from new observations and recent surveys along the coast, providing enriching new data.
