[Americana]. NOLIN (Jean-Baptiste); CORONELLI (Vincenzo). L' - Lot 258
[Americana]. NOLIN (Jean-Baptiste); CORONELLI (Vincenzo). L'Amérique septentrionale, ou, la partie septentrionale des Indes Occidentales. Paris, J. B. Nolin, 1689. 1 copper-engraved map (45 x 59.5) cm. on sheet 47.5 x 64.7 cm. with contemporary colored borders (marginal restorations). A fine, rare copy of the first state of J.B. Nolin's map of North America. Jean Baptiste Nolin based this map of North America on the 20-sheet map by Vincenzo Maria Coronelli published in 1688. However, the addition of place names in the Hudson Bay region clearly differentiates it from Coronelli's map. This copy is the first state of this map, which differs from the later states published around 1690. The second state changes the publisher's address, adds a legend to the left of Québec, replaces Bristol with Boston, inserts the town and river of Kenebeck in Maine... And the third state gives credit to Jean Nicolas de Tralage, Sieur Tillemon for a few corrections and augmentations. A fourth state was published later, in 1704. This map features one of the most glaring geographical errors of the century: California is depicted as a huge island, instead of its true peninsular form. The representations of the various regions are based on information from several explorations. The Great Lakes are based on information supplied by Louis Jolliet and Jacques Marquette, the mouth of the Mississippi is distorted according to the discoveries of René-Robert Cavelier, and the names of several western localities are taken from the manuscript of Diego Dionisio de Peñalosa Briceño y Berdugo. In addition, the Rio Grande is divided into Rio Norte and Rio Bravo. (Burden, II, 656).
