[Atlas]. ROBERT DE VAUGONDY (Gilles and Didier). Atlas portatif, universel et militaire, composé d'après les meilleures cartes, tant gravées que manuscrites des plus célèbres géographes et ingénieurs. A Paris, chez l'auteur, 1748 [and 1749]. In-4 oblong (24.5 x 34.5 cm), 3 ff. n.ch., 209 maps, contemporary marbled fawn calf, ribbed spine, red title-pieces, red edges (Binding worn, top board partly unbound, Mottling, first few leaves creased).
Atlas comprising a table, an engraved title by Guil. Delahaye and 209 watercolor boundary maps, some folding, by [Gilles] Robert [de Vaugondy], with privilege of 1748 - and by his son Didier under the signature Robert de Vaugondy, with privilege dated 1749.
The first map is an "Introduction to the knowledge and use of maps", while the next is a "Mappemonde ou description du globe terrestre". The work alternates the father's maps with those of his son. Europe is covered by 157 maps, Asia by 11, Africa by 13, and the Americas by 26, including two maps of Guyana and Brazil based on those of La Condamine.
