FLAMSTEED (John). Flamsteed's Celestial Atlas, approved by t - Lot 12
FLAMSTEED (John). Flamsteed's Celestial Atlas, approved by the Royal Academy of Sciences. 2nd edition. Paris, chez Deschamps et chez l'Auteur, 1776. Small in-4, VIII-40 pp, 30 copper-engraved maps mounted on tabs, 19th c. green half-percaline, smooth spine, title and large gilt fleurons (upper spine split, short margins, qq. edges trimmed). First published in 1729 as an atlas for his Historia coelestis, Flamsteed's celestial atlas is the most important star atlas of the 18th century. It represented the first updated celestial atlas since Tycho Brahe's star catalog and Hevelius' atlas. Second edition by Jean-Baptiste Fortin, revised and enlarged by P.-C. Le Monnier, François Pasumot and Abbé N.-L. de La Caille, of this famous celestial atlas illustrated with 30 double-page maps. The text following the maps (40 pages) is entitled "Du catalog des étoiles". For this edition, all the maps were reduced in size and the position of the stars was set for the year 1780, instead of the year 1690 originally chosen by Flamsteed. Two new maps were also included: that of the northern celestial hemisphere, and that of the southern planisphere drawn by La Caille.
