Histoire et vues pittoresques de tous les sites de l'île se rattachant au Mémorial de Sainte-Hélène et à l'expédition de S. A. R. le prince de Joinville. Paris, Gide, 1844. Large folio (approx. 60 x 41 cm.), [3] f., 55 p., plates, period brown speckled half calf, smooth spine with romantic decoration, gilt title, marbled slipcase (spine faded and rubbed, headpieces restored, split at tail of upper spine, rubbing at edges of slipcase, very discreet marginal foxing on q. plates).
Important work dedicated to the memory of Emperor Napoleon I, designed and illustrated by Henri Durand-Brager (1814-1879), orientalist and marine painter, who took part in the 1840 expedition to bring back Napoleon's body from St. Helena.
The illustration comprises 29 lithographed plates, including 5 portraits of notable figures such as Prince de Joinville, General Baron Gourgaud and Count de Las Cases. There are also 24 views of various places in and around James Town, on St. Helena. Notable scenes include Sugar-Loaf Point, Briars Waterfall, and important sites such as Ladder Hill and Longwood. The series also depicts the events of the ceremony in James Town, the embarkation and departure from St. Helena.
The portraits were drawn and lithographed by Leveille and G. Staal, while the views based on paintings by Durand-Brager were lithographed by himself, Delaplante, Eugène Cicéri, Sabatier and others.
Some numbering errors are noted in the table of plates, plate 17 has been deleted (it never appeared), plate 22 bears no. 24, and plate 24 bears no. 22.
