[Astronomy]. DOPPELMAYR (Johann Gabriel) ; HOMANN (Jean Bapt - Lot 9
[Astronomy]. DOPPELMAYR (Johann Gabriel) ; HOMANN (Jean Baptiste), ed. Phaenomena motuumi Irregularium quos planetae inferiores venus et mercurius as annum salutis MDCCX Noribergae, Johanne Baptistae Homanni, [ca. 1750]. 1 copper-engraved plate, ca. 36 x 26 cm, on sheet ca. 45 x 56 cm, qq. colored lines (short margins touching inf. and left edges of map, repaired cracks at center fold with one missing at title).
Interesting celestial chart illustrating the irregular movements of the planets Venus and Mercury for the year 1710. In the center, Mercury, Venus and the Earth are shown orbiting the Sun, with the predicted altitude of Mercury and Venus throughout the year indicated on the side borders.
This highly decorative piece features a large composition with allegorical figures of the planets, including a celestial chariot.
In 1742, all Doppelmayr's maps published by Homann were brought together in the Atlas Coelestis in quo Mundus Spectabilis. This atlas comprises 30 plates: 10 celestial maps and 20 illustrations and diagrams dealing with various aspects of astronomy. Although the title page still mentions 1742, later editions of this atlas bear a modified title Atlas Novus Coelestis... and often contain additional plates. This copy comes from one of these editions, numbered 7 in the upper margin.
