[French Guiana]. BIET (Antoine). Voyage de la France equinox - Lot 20
[French Guiana]. BIET (Antoine). Voyage de la France equinoxiale en l'Isle de Cayenne entrepris par le François en l'année 1652. Divisé en trois livres... A Paris, chez François Clouzier, 1664. In-4, [12] f., 432 p., contemporary speckled brown calf, 5-rib renewed spine edged with gilt fillets with red title-piece, gilt scrolls on the edges (epidermures on the boards, dull corners, rubbed edges, worm work on the back covers, faded title, minor browning and foxing, ink stain with hole affecting qq. letters p. 69-70, small ink stains p.285, browned cahier Oo). Rare first edition of this account by explorer Antoine Biet. It is divided into three parts: the first describes his embarkation and route to the island of Cayenne and the establishment of the colony; the second recounts the events of his fifteen-month stay there; the third deals with the climate, the fertility of the soil, and the habits and customs of the region's inhabitants. The work is completed by a dictionary of the Galibi language used in the country. Antoine Biet, parish priest of Sainte-Geneviève de Senlis, was chaplain to the 500 or 600 settlers and adventurers that Royville took with him to French Guiana. Biet's first-hand account of the native inhabitants of Guiana at the time is rich and detailed. Early handwritten bookplates on title. (Sabin, 5269; Chadenat 18).
