[Marine]. APRES DE MANNEVILLETTE (Jean-Baptiste-Nicolas-Deni - Lot 8
[Marine]. APRES DE MANNEVILLETTE (Jean-Baptiste-Nicolas-Denis d'). Le Neptune Oriental, dedicated to the King. [Followed by] Supplément au Neptune oriental. A Paris, chez Demonville, et à Brest, chez Malassis, 1775 [et] 1781. 2 parts in 1 vol. in-folio, contemporary speckled tan basane, 7-ribbed spine, red edges (binding worn, defects including spine partly uncovered, jaws split, arms in center scratched; sporadic wetness at foot, 1 f. of text lacking, detailed condition on request). Second and last edition, extensively revised and enlarged (the first appeared in 1745), with a copper-engraved frontispiece by Tilliard after François Boucher, and 64 maps. This copy is followed by the Supplement, comprising 4 charts, for a total of 68. Arguably France's foremost 18th-century hydrographer, J. d'Après de Mannevillette (1707-1780) offers here the best version of his major work, in the second edition he spent 30 years perfecting. These maps are the result both of his observations during his voyages on ships belonging to the Compagnie des Indes, and of a demanding study in his office. They were considered the most accurate of their time by the navigators who used them. I. Frontispiece, [2] f. (title, dedication, table of articles, Extract from the registers, Privilege), X p. (Preface), cols. 1-132 and 137-194 (mq. 1 f. with cols. 133-136) (Instructions sur la navigation de France aux Indes), [3] p. (table, notice to the binder); 64 maps. - II. [2] ff (title, notice, author's life ), 12 columns (Additions and corrections to the Neptune oriental), 4 maps. (12321 127; Phillips, I-3167).
