Ottoman Turkey, circa 1560 - Lot 73
Ottoman Turkey, circa 1560 Beautiful frieze of acanthus leaf iznik tiles in siliceous ceramic with painted decoration under transparent glaze, composed of four tiles, decorated with stylized acanthus leaves in reserve on a turquoise background, each decorated with a bouquin of small blue flowers with red leaves. Very good overall condition of the glaze despite a few chips, framed, one corner replaced. Size: 16.7 x 40 cm (as seen) This extremely fine example dates from the 1560s, and is similar to wares produced in the Iznik kilns, such as those used to decorate the mausoleum of Hürrem Sultan, completed in 1558, and the Rüstem Pasha mosque in 1563. The motif appears to be rare, and only one other identical occurrence has been identified (Çinili Köşk Museum, Istanbul, inventory number unknown, image available at https://pbase.com/dosseman/cinpol, accessed November 9, 2024).
