Robert COMBAS (b. 1957) [FRANCE] - Lot 61
Robert COMBAS (b. 1957) [FRANCE] BOUDDHA EN PLEIN DE BOUTS SUR LE CORPS - CIRCA 1990 Acrylic on canvas mounted on canvas. Signed lower right. 166 x 100 cm This work is listed in the Combas archives. An eternal provocateur, the painter from Sète has a very special relationship with religious phenomena and the sacred. In his work, Robert Combas often emphasizes a vertical link, a direct relationship between heaven and earth, between the religious and the profane. In this depiction of Buddha, Combas lends a lively, insolent touch, despite the composition's sober, classical form. Details invade the surface of the canvas, where our Buddha is enthroned in majesty, yet made up of human faces and enigmatic motifs. At his feet, a green, feminized monster with breasts embraces him, while arrogant stars seem to laugh at this mystical allegory.
