*Maurice de VLAMINCK (1876-1958) [FRANCE] Still life with newspaper, circa 1925-1930 Oil on canvas. In our painting, Vlaminck continues the great tradition of the "silent life" genre, initiated in the 17th century by French masters such as Le Nain, Linard and Louise Moillon, and continued by Chardin, Courbet and Manet. This tradition of simplicity implies the choice of modest objects, of composition without pomp. Here, the painter refers to everyday objects: a coffeepot and its coffee cup, his newspaper, his pipe and a box of matches. Fragments of everyday life, they impose themselves on our gaze thanks to the artist's pictorial virtuosity, his ability to translate matter. But Vlaminck avoids the triviality of realism: their pictorial evidence is the flip side of the mystery of the existence of things.
