THE TEMPTATION OF S. ANTOINE, ornée de figures et de musique LE POT-POURRI DE LOTH, orné de figures et de musique. London [Paris, Cazin], 1781. In-8, porphyry calf, triple gilt fillet on covers, ornate smooth spine, burgundy morocco title-piece, filleted edges, gilt edges (period binding). False-title, title-frontispiece, 10 ff. 8 engravings, 8 pp. of engraved music; false-title, title-frontispiece, 10 ff. [1 f.], 8 engravings, 12 pp. of engraved music. First edition printed on heavy laid paper. Text framed in double fillet. The figures, printed on strong vellum, are by Borel and were engraved by Elluin. La Tentation de Saint-Antoine is by Sedaine. It is "a truly original mockery that will not be forgotten as long as there are people who celebrate saints." (Gay). The demons that harass the saint are highly amusing. Pot-pourri has sometimes been attributed to Pierre Lalleman, sometimes to Poinsinet. Very slight spotting, rare foxing. Armorial bookplate of P.-Guy Pellion, an important bibliophile whose literary library was sold in several auctions in 1882. Cohen, 948, who does not mention the large paper edition; Dutel, A-1049***. Extremely rare first edition on strong Hollande paper of this very successful facétie with high-quality engravings.
