N.-E. RETIF-DE-LA-BRETONE. L'Andrographe,... - Lot 93 - Gros & Delettrez
N.-E. RETIF-DE-LA-BRETONE. 475 pp, [1 p.] First edition. Restif's first intended title was L'Anthropographe ou l'Homme réformé, a title found at the head of the text. It constitutes volume 4 of the "Idées singulières" and completes the Gynographe. Restif considered this book "far superior to the first two in the importance of its subject matter", and it was here that he gave full rein to his socialist ideas. Restif's influence on the 19th-century social reformers Fourier, Louis Blanc, Leroux and Proudhon has long been downplayed, if not obscured. Who would have boasted of having drawn on the works of an author whose licentious writings had caused a scandal? According to Tabarant, quoted by Rives Childs, the Andrographe "circulated only through peddling. It is one of the rarest." Joints rubbed, superficial epidermure on first board, small epidermure on lower jaw, a few freckles. Childs, p. 281.
