[Benoit-Michel DECOMBEROUSSE]. Caquire, Parodie... - Lot 35 - Gros & Delettrez
[Benoit-Michel DECOMBEROUSSE]. Caquire, Parodie de Zaire, Par M. de Vessaire, seconde édition, considérablement emmerdée. A Chio, de l'imprimerie d'Avalons [Lyon, ca 1780]. In-8, modern bradel cardboard, long title, untrimmed. 78 pp. with engraved scatological frontispiece. The most complete and sought-after second edition. Scatological parody of Voltaire's play Zaïre, in which all the characters are given grotesque names: Zaïre becomes Caquire, Corasmin becomes Crotenmain The frontispiece is supposed to depict the author's tomb. The play is said to have been written by Decomberousse (1751-1841), a lawyer and playwright born in Villeurbanne. "It is the most cheerful and witty of all the plays in this genre" (Gay). (Gay). Marginal restorations to 3 leaves. Gay I, 476. A good, wide-margined copy of this witty parody.
