[Astolphe de CUSTINE]. Aloys, ou Le Religieux... - Lot 34 - Gros & Delettrez
[Astolphe de CUSTINE]. Aloys, ou Le Religieux du Mont saint Bernard. Paris, Vezard, 1829. In-12, slightly later eggplant Russian half-leather, smooth decorated spine, gilt title and date, yellow edges. viij, 243 pp. Extremely rare first edition of Custine's first novel. It is also the last of the babilan novels, and the publisher's foreword refers specifically to the Duchesse de Duras's novel Ourika. A story of love and hate with a strong autobiographical content. Custine, who has fallen in love with the unsuspecting Mme de Duras, is persuaded to marry her youngest daughter Clara, whom he does not love. He finally breaks this impossible promise of marriage, and from that moment on lives with contradictory emotions of love and hate towards the duchess. Custine claims that his break with her was the cause of all the misfortunes that befell him. In Aloys, le roman de la vengeance, which he wrote after the death of Claire de Duras, he gives the truth of his story. But was it the truth? Aloys, published anonymously and in small numbers, went unnoticed by contemporaries. Nevertheless, the novel is an important milestone in the literary history of the Romantic movement. Spine and corners slightly rubbed, marginal stain on a few leaves. Carteret I, 462, who cites it without describing it; missing in Quérard, Vicaire, Escoffier. A fine copy of this extremely rare work by the famous author of La Russie en 1839.
