[Victorine COLLIN DES GIMEES]. Ninka, Par... - Lot 32 - Gros & Delettrez
[Victorine COLLIN DES GIMEES]. Ninka, Par Madame***. Paris, A la Librairie Universelle de P. Mongie aîné, 1826. In-12, fawn half-basane, smooth spine decorated, speckled edges. [2 ff.], 1 62 pp, [1 f.] catalog. First edition. Rare novel relating the love affair of a young Javanese woman converted to Christianity with an explorer. Barbier III, 415. Only two copies in public libraries, at BnF and Leiden University Library. Bound in suite: ZOLOE. Paris, Ambroise Dupont et Roret, 1826. [2 ff.], 163 pp. First edition of this very rare babilan novel, which follows Ourika et Edouard by the Duchesse de Duras, creator of the genre, Jocko by Pougens, Olivier by Latouche, and precedes Armance by Stendhal. Set in Martinique, Zoloé describes the impossible love of Zoloé, the daughter of a black slave, and Gabriel, the son of a wealthy planter. This work should not be confused with Zoloé et ses deux acolythes, published in Turin [Paris] in year VIII and attributed to Sade. Upper headband damaged, upper margin of first cover darkened, corners rubbed, a few light brown spots. Vicaire VII, 1232. Interesting reunion of two very rare novels.
