VIGÉE LE BRUN, Élisabeth (1755-1842). Set... - Lot 37 - Gros & Delettrez
VIGÉE LE BRUN, Élisabeth (1755-1842). Set of 2 documents: -M.A.S. "A Maupertuis, chez le marquis de Montesquiou", s.d. 1/2 p. in-folio on double sheet of watermarked laid paper. Scratches, additions and corrections. Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun is dissatisfied with her portrait of Montesquiou. "A man of much spirit but dry and rebellious [...] he was gentle, affable, he was not the same man anymore. When sometimes we stayed in small numbers, he would read to us in the evenings and did so wonderfully [...]". She describes the daughter-in-law of the latter, then the mother-in-law of the Marquis and adds "it is there that I made the portrait of Mr de Montesquiou. I was never happy with this portrait, I was fat and suffering. She continues: "One evening in a small committee he told each of us our auroscope [sic], he predicted that I would live a long time, and that I would be a pleasant old woman because I was not a rascal. -L.A.S. to "de Sorgo". S.l.n.d. 2 pp. small in-12. Green paper. Pasted in the margin of the address leaf. Vigée Le Brun evokes an evening she gave "a little large" which did not "tire her at all. I like so much to receive my friends well [...]". She says she is very attached to her correspondent and has been for a long time and adds "I have to thank you for having made me listen to this young lady that you have introduced to me, she already sings so well and with an excellent method. Please give her my compliments and thanks", etc.
