NEUVILLE, Alphonse de (1835-1885). Very important... - Lot 23 - Gros & Delettrez
NEUVILLE, Alphonse de (1835-1885). Very important set of 77 L.A.S. addressed to Émile Aucante (1822-1908), nephew and secretary of George Sand, director of collections at Calmann-Lévy and of the Univers Illustré in particular. About 110 pp. of different sizes. 1861-1865 and n.d. One letter torn without missing. Important and rich artistic conversation. Neuville evokes his works: paintings, illustrations of novels and magazines (which he quotes), woods (in particular for L'Univers illustré) and the numerous corresponding payments. "...] Please be so kind as to collect a supply of wood. Within eight days I will leave for Antwerp, and I will spend about a month there. As in this city I will have absolutely nothing but your drawings to do, it will not be too much for me to take 15 to 16 pieces of wood of each kind, 15 large, 15 small [...]". Neuville details his innumerable shipments of drawings and woodcuts for the issues of the Univers Illustré, with titles, prices, etc., and sometimes answers Aucante about the latter's letters. Attached are 2 documents "Exploitation franco-belge" signed by Neuville for drawings on wood (1863) and a period photographic portrait (Contemporary Gallery).
