[BÉNÉDITE, Léonce (1859-1925), art historian and brilliant curator of French museums, notably the Musée du Luxembourg and the Musée Rodin] - MATSUKATA. Set of 4 documents addressed to Bénédite, from the art dealers: Bernheim Jeune & Cie and Durand Ruel and from the collector Matsukata. Exceptional set relating to the purchases of the Japanese collector Matsukata. -Matsukata Kōjirō (1865-1950), Japanese shipowner and collector. His formidable collection of French art constitutes the heart of the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo. L.D.S. with autograph additions. Kobe, July 3, 1920. 3 pp. large in-4. Printed letterhead of his company "Kawasaki Dockyard Limited". Matsukaka orders the casting of Rodin's masterpiece Les Portes de l'Enfer, now kept in Tokyo: "It was more than kind of you to advise me bronze casting of Porte de l'Enfer in your letter and I took liberty of cabling you to have one piece on the 25th, ult., as I am more than anxious to have Rodin's monumental work for the japanese public's sake. I beg to thank you once more for your most graceful suggestion, and trust you will proceed with the work, and you will greatly oblige me by rendering its account when finished. I know I requested you to buy several masters Museum size pictures at average 30 000 francs and I shall be more than grateful to you, if good pictures by Renoir and Carrière could be bought through your influence. You have also kindly mentioned that Maurice Denis picture could be bought in Salon, and I beg to hasten to request you to buy five or six of his work, if good pictures are to be found somewhere by the same artist. I like this work very much and shall be very glad to have them, if I can [...] ". To the sum of 1,200,000 francs already paid, he will add another 1,000,000 francs for these last acquisitions, etc. Fascinating. -Durand-Ruel: L.D.S. (1 p. in-4) and invoice (1 p. in-4). 1921. The invoice details the content of this shipment, with the title of the works: Renoir, Puvis de Chavannes, Millet, Courbet, Corot, D'Espagnat, Albert André (6), etc. For a total amount of 1 270 000 francs. -Bernheim jeune : purchase invoice dated 1921 : Degas, Monet, Rodin, Renoir, Cézanne, Toulouse-Lautrec, Manet, Van Gogh, Courbet, Carrière, etc. For a total of 2307 francs. 1 p. in-4.
