Alexander and Darius, Europe, ca. 1750 Folded fan, the leaf in skin, mounted in English, and painted in gouache, of a Roman general receiving Darius' family in his tent, begging for mercy. A group of men beg him on the left. One wears a blue ermine-lined coat, probably the fallen King Darius. To the right, soldiers in an encampment. Painted reverse of young women walking to make offerings to the statue of Minerva. Cut-out ivory* mount, engraved with dogs and painted with shells and corals.
