Portrait of Claire Emilie, Marquise de las Marismas, Viscountess Aguado Canvas Height : 78cm Width : 63cm Old restorations Claire Emilie, marquise de las Marismas, viscountess Aguado, born Mac Donell (Algiers 1817-Paris 1905). Daughter of the English Consul General Hugh Mac Donell, she married in 1841 in Florence to Viscount Alexandre Jean Aguado (1813-1861), a rich Franco-Spaniard, close to the Imperial family. She became the fourth lady-in-waiting of the Empress. Winterhalter represents her several times, very recognizable with her famous "English", she is sitting on the right of the Empress in the painting dated 1855, representing her surrounded by her ladies-in-waiting, (museum of the castle of Compiègne) In 1855, Müller was appointed by the Emperor to paint a solemn picture of the "Arrival of Queen Victoria at the Château de Saint-Cloud, 18 August 1855". Exhibited at the 1857 Salon, the painting was destroyed in the Saint-Cloud fire in 1870. A sketch of the composition is kept at Buckingham Palace. The Marquise de las Marismas is shown on the left Marquise de las Marismas is shown on the left behind the imperial couple, as can be seen in old photos of the picture.
