Amazing wax-headed figure wearing a Grand... - Lot 17 - Gros & Delettrez
Amazing wax-headed figure wearing a Grand siècle stage costume. This curious subject with a wax head and a body made of armed cloth and wood has finely carved and painted features, a slender body with large hands made of painted wood (small lacks in the right hand) and a fabulous stage costume of the kind worn by male dancers or opera singers during the reign of Louis XIV. Is this a profane character for a very small crib ? Would it be rather the portrait of an artist of the time or a nobleman who performed at a costume ball ? We do not know. Under its wooden base, calligraphic and stamped numbers would suggest the inventory number of a museum collection. 9’’ tall, this very old character is preserved in an enviable state, given the fragility of the silk textiles and gold trims of this period.
