Henri-Joseph HARPIGNIES (1819-1916)
"Schoolchildren on a walk" Oil on canvas signed and dated 1872 63 x 90cm Henri HARPIGNIES is one of the most gifted students of the landscape gardener Jean-Baptiste Camille COROT. His passion for nature and his sense of light are nourished by his initiatory travels through France, Flanders and Italy. Although he was almost exclusively a landscape gardener, around the middle of the century he performed a few animated scenes where he was not insensitive to Courbet's realism ("Sauve-qui-peut" kept in the Valenciennes Museum). Our painting belongs to this vein, describing a trip of schoolchildren with their master to the countryside, the modest subject being nevertheless accompanied by the beautiful Harpigny paste craft.
